Palm Kills Treo In Europe, Promises Replacement
Fails new EU hazardous materials legislation.
Palm's Treo 650 has never been as popular in Europe as it has been in the States, in the UK its only ever been carried by Orange and even then its never been heavily promoted compared to the company's other smartphone offerings.
Now even the small presence that Palm had has been wiped off the European map after the PDA supplier was forced to end European shipments when the Treo could not be made to comply with the EU's new Reduction OF Hazardous Substances legislation, which came into effect on July 1st.
In announcing the cessation of European shipments the company promised a new, Europe only, Treo to fill the gap. Unfortunately as this is due by late Autumn at the earliest its likely that Palm will fall further behind Nokia and Microsoft in the smartphone marketplace. For a company that's already looking decidedly wobbly, that can't be good news.
